Microsoft Codename “Athens” changing online communities

After several months of work, changing dependancies, a couple designs, and a handful of UI attempts, we are gettign ready to release a Beta of the community platform we have been working on (Codename: Athens).Athens is made up of three pillars, Community Discovery Services, Community Membership Services, and Community Discussion Services.

Community Discovery Services enable the discoverability of useful content. One of the first forrays into this territory is by enabling social tagging and bookmarking. We have built a frontend for this service called Tagspace.

Tagspace allows you to tag and book mark web-based content. For our beta it is limited to Microsoft content, and a few select others. Over time we will open it up to enable you to tag more and more content across the Wild, Wild, Web. The original Tagspace beta, launched a few months ago, is up currently, and will be replaced by the new beta soon.

Community Discussion Services is a service platform to enable threaded discussion. We are currently building two frontends for this, Forums and Blogs, which will ultimately replace the current http://forums.microsoft.com and http://blogs.msdn.com / http://blogs.technet.com.

Microsoft lays out plans for Virtual Earth

Microsoft’s John Curlander on Thursday demonstrated his company’s Virtual Earth application for modeling cities in 3D. Microsoft flies over metropolises to get aerial imagery and captures video from the ground to create a real-world experience of places like Manhattan in a virtual space.

Here at ETech, a four-day conference on emerging tech, Curlander said Microsoft has launched the application for several virtual cities, such as Chicago (where it had to fly higher than in other cities because of local government concerns about privacy). But he said Microsoft will introduce another 20 cities in the next couple of weeks. To protect people’s privacy, Curlander said Microsoft uses face-blurring technology on its street-side images.

Microsoft executives are also holding regular discussions on where to take Virtual Earth in the realms of entertainment, gaming and commerce, according to Curlander. For example, Microsoft might open up the software so developers can create games for the Xbox 360 out of Virtual Earth.

Also, Curlander said the company currently has 370 million users of instant messaging, and MSN is considering merging those users with Virtual Earth so they can chat in the virtual setting. But, he said, Virtual Earth developers want to blot out the real cars depicted in the application so people can drive virtual cars in the 3D world.

“First we have to erase cars that are there and put in virtual cars that could be part of IM,” Curlander said.

He added: “We’re having lots of discussions about how we’re going to start merging online games out of Virtual Earth…and taking commerce into 3D.”

Microsoft’s Live Search disables Advanced Search Queries

From the Live Search WebLog:

For those of you who use some of the advanced query syntax in our search engine such as link:, linkdomain: and inurl:, you may have noticed that this functionality has been recently turned off. We have been seeing broad use of these features by legitimate users but unfortunately also what appears to be mass automated usage for data mining. So for now, we have made the tough call to block all queries with these operators.

We are doing our best to get this back online as soon as possible in a manner that allows folks that use this functionality for real queries. We have a few good ideas up our sleeve on how to enable this, but want to make sure we are making the right changes that will give you the functionality you want and all of our customers the experience they deserve. Our apologies and thank you for being patient. Keep an eye on our blog for updates.

Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool

A brand new tool has been released to www.windowsvista.com that allows you to analyze your network’s router to see if it supports certain technologies.

The Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool checks your Internet router to see if it supports certain technologies. You can use this tool on a PC running either the Windows Vista or Windows XP operating system. If you’re planning to run Windows Vista, this tool can verify whether your existing Internet router supports advanced features, such as improved download speeds and face-to-face collaboration using Windows Meeting Space.

The tool is intended to be run from a home network behind a home Internet (NAT) router. Running this tool from behind a corporate firewall or on operating systems other than those specified above won’t produce accurate results. This tool requires administrator privileges to run.

The tests can require up to 10 minutes to complete and do not make any permanent changes to your router. For the most accurate results, your computer should be connected directly to your Internet router, using a wired connection.

Note Although it is unlikely, testing might interrupt your Internet connectivity or cause your router to stop responding. If you require uninterrupted Internet access at this time (for example, if you are in the middle of downloading a large file, bidding on a time-sensitive Internet auction, or playing an online game), you should wait and do this testing at another time.

Chinese MMO offers accounts to banned players who donate blood

An online game operator has demanded that banned players donate blood to be allowed back into the game. Moliyo, which runs a 3D massively multiplayer online game in China, made the demand after banning 120,000 players who attempted to hack the game, according to gaming news website, 17173.com.

More than 100 players had already signed up to exchange half a litre (1 pint) of blood for game accounts, 17173 reported (in Chinese). The company has also offered free accounts to ordinary players who give blood, the website claimed.

Texyt.com staff were unable to locate the announcement on Moliyo’s website, although the company’s forum does include a copy (in Chinese) of 17173’s story.

According to the announcement, the players must attend a public blood donation drive in the city of Nanjing tomorrow afternoon. Locked accounts will be reopened within 3 days.

Chinese hospitals have had increasing difficulty attracting blood donors in recent years after scandals in which tens of thousands of donors and blood recipients contracted HIV, the virus which causes AIDS. Blood donors in China are usually paid about 12 dollars per donation.

Moliyo arranged the event in an attempt to “create a civilized society, and enhance online gamers’ appreciation of social responsibility and public welfare,” according to 17173.com.

The games company banned 120,000 players of the popular game Cabal earlier this month, because they used unauthorized software to artificially boost their standing in the game. Moliyo operates several games in China, including Cabal, and Tales of Pirates.

Nortel, Microsoft To Expand Communications Pact

The two companies are expanding their existing partnership and will sell jointly developed products to telephone companies that serve business clients.

Nortel Networks Corp. and Microsoft Corp. are expanding their existing partnership and will sell jointly developed products to telephone companies that serve business clients.

The two companies are expected to announce the new details of their partnership later on Wednesday.

Software giant Microsoft and Nortel, North America’s biggest maker of telephone equipment, first announced in July that they would work together on making telephone service, e-mail, instant messaging, video conferencing and other communications services simpler and more convenient to use by linking office phones and computers.

Nortel’s and Microsoft’s new products will let telephone companies provide such “unified” service for business customers. The two expect to start field trials of the new offering in the second half of 2007, with general availability by year-end.

Having phone companies host the combined communications services means that small- and medium-sized business clients won’t have to buy, install and manage their own network in order to have access, the companies say.

“If you’re small, you really don’t want to be tied up to all of the capital expenditure investment, nor do you really want to manage this yourself,” Richard Lowe, Nortel’s president of carrier networks, said in an interview.

The two companies think this will also benefit the phone companies, because it will let them squeeze more value from their existing networks.

“I’m quite optimistic that, as part of our overall carrier (voice over Internet protocol) strategy, this is going to play very well,” Lowe said.

He would not elaborate on the revenue Toronto-based Nortel hopes to capture from sales to carriers. In July, Chief Executive Mike Zafirovski said he saw more than $1 billion in new revenue over the four-year lifespan of the original deal with Microsoft.

At the time, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer predicted that within 10 years all business communications would be Web-based.

Under the July pact, the two companies are working on big-business, mobile and wireline carrier products, and have also agreed to cross-license intellectual property.
