Sharepoint link love 6-7-2007

At first, thanks for your nice comments, it’s a pleasure to hear some feedback, glad you like my blog :-)

Remember, it is not my content, credits for the articles goes to the owner. The only thing I do, is reading A LOT of blogs and RSS feeds and aggregate them for you, so you don’t have to go through al these feeds, blogs and articles. Did I miss a good blog which is worth to incorporate in my daily reading? Please drop a comment and I will include it in my feedreader.

So, here we go the (almost) daily Sharepoint Link Love:

Missing Windows SharePoint Services Workflow Code Snippets

Today, while messing around with a SharePoint Hello World Workflow project, I ran into an issue where the code snippets for feature.xml and workflow.xml files went missing in Visual Studio 2005. I found this link.

Steps to Fix:

TechEd Session Follow up and Resources

Thanks to everyone who came to my session at TechEd.  There was a ton of information to cover and I had to zip through it rather fast in order to hit the highlights.  I am going to post a series of articles based on my presentation that will present more information about each topic that we covered.   In the meantime, I have updated my Speaking page to include the slide deck (with extraneous slides removed) and posted links for the CSS Chart I showed in the session, and a download for the base Publishing site master page that I used in the session.

SharePoint Architectures and MUST HAVE Documents

I just had a client inquiry on information I have shared before but I think warrants a re-publish of sorts. It concerns base reference architectures and comprehensive documentation for architecting and deployment your SharePoint solution. So here it is.

Links to MUST HAVE downloads:

Example of Silverlight – SharePoint Integration Complete with Downloadable Code

Over at the Blog Binary Jam Simon Tocker has been doing some pretty nifty work with SharePoint and Silverlight. He has created a Silverlight application that pulls images from a SPS 2003 image library then serves them up in a slick Silverlight slide show. He then re-did an existing SharePoint web part to render it. Best of all he has made the whole project available for download. J

It would be really cool to see this working within WSS 3.0/MOSS 2007.

Test Drive Forefront Security for SharePoint

I was just over on the Ian Morrish site and I saw a pointer to a great new online resource, the “Forefront Security for SharePoint Virtual Lab.”

From the lab site:

“After completing this lab, you will be better able to:

  • Scanning Documents for Viruses
  • Running a Manual Scan Job

How to index SharePoint Portal Server 2003 list items in SharePoint Server 2007 (KB article)

SharePoint v3 Books: There are (many) more just released!

Since I last wrote about SharePoint v3 books here, many weeks have gone by and especially in the last couple of weeks there have been a flood of books that have made it to the Amazon US NON Pre-Order list. I have to write it that way because a couple of times I’ve been told by the author that a book is out only for Amazon to either not remove it from pre-order status or to half remove it (= remove it; change it back to pre-order; make it non-available and various other options designed to make me mad).

Create a SharePoint 2007 Customization Policy

As a developer working on SharePoint customizations within Microsoft, I can attest to the end-user benefit of a clear and concise customization policy for any MOSS deployment. Sean Livingston has made available a document which was the basis for Microsoft’s own SharePoint customization policy, and that you can use as a starting point for creating your own policies.

My favorite tool just got better!

U2U have released a new version of the U2U CAML Query Builder, and this time it can be installed as a feature, and has a web interface instead of the windows form application it was so far. GREAT!

Allowing InfoPath forms to redirect to pages in other site collections

In InfoPath 2007, when you publish a form as a web form, you have the option to specify several query string parameters. One of those parameters is the “Source” parameter, which is “The location to which the user will be redirected when the form is closed. The URL must be in the same site collection or an error will be returned.” The error mentioned is “The following location is not accessible, because it is in a different site collection:” and the url you specified.

Video: Creating A Knowledge Center 4 of 6

Creating A Knowledge Center Series: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6

This is video 4 of 6 in the Creating a Knowledge Center Series, Processes & Procedures. When creating an area for formalized processes and procedures it is imperative that contents be stored in a fashion that ensures that these authoritative documents are locked down and all interactions logged for possible auditing necessities. Interestingly enough setting up such an area within the knowledge center is perhaps the easiest of all the functional areas.

Team Site Life Cycle Management and SharePoint Customization Policy

Two quick after-lunch readings all you SharePointees might want to take a look at.

Promoting a MOSS box to a domain controller

When you promote a MOSS box (WSS v3.0 included of course), you will find that your service accounts will be all out of shape. If you try and hit any of your WSS v3.0 hosted web sites, including any central administration sites, you will receive errors. If you try and run the configuration wizard you will also more than likely end up at the end of that with an error saying something similar to “the account name is invalid”.

Upgrading/Migrating.. the story continues!

Together with a colleague of mine we are trying to upgrade a large Sharepoint 2003 environment to 2007. And ofcourse, as always, this is not a typical straightforward configuration. This environment uses the Shared Services feature (aka the SSP of 2003) and the thing why I’m blogging is the use of user profiles. Now we (or at least I) didn’t knew the exact details until yesterday when we found a document about this subject. So if you see the image below you are seeing the difference between a MySite and a Public Profile site, I always thought that these two pages were linked to each other therefore implying that an user who has a public profile page always had a MySite as well. But this is not true, so when migrating you’ve to migrate the user profiles and the MySite.

All parts of a series on creating web parts and deploying them to SharePoint using a VS 2005 Solution Project. There are 6 parts in the series.

SharePoint 2007 Dilemna - Which Do You Choose: Master Pages vs Themes?

A Master Pages vs. Themes: Which Do You Choose? by Heather Solomon about the differences between a theme and master pages. The key differences are : Master Pages Can totally change the look of a site. Can hide SharePoint components that you don’t want to use. Will allow you to alter the layout of the page, in addition to changing the colors and images used in the site. Will not affect _layouts pages.

Coming Soon! Content Query Web Part with Context Menus

Well, I promised you something that will knock your socks off, so hold on!
I have started a new open source project for an Enhanced Content Query Web Part that will have the enhancement (in the first stage) of Context Menus.
(note - the project is not yet published - I need to figure out why my laptop suddenly refuses to connect to codeplex, and I will release the beta)
