Sharepoint link love 06-11-2007

MossAdRotator available for download

Quite a few people have asked me for a downable copy of the MossAdRotator control I discussed in March, so I have created a C# class file that you can download.

Establishing relationship between two lists on a share point site

Before I got to know about what I am going to write here, I was pretty convinced that there is no way to establish a relationship between two lists using lookup columns in case of the source column having multiple copies of data.

Compatibility meter - Share point 2007 and MS Access 2007

I was on this engagement where I had to make use of management information stored in MS Access 2007 and MS Excel 2007 in a share point 2007 site.

It’s been 150 years since I used Access to do some basic database management stuff in a small library management application and here was with some data in access, some in excel and a share point site.

TechEd Recap and session links

First, thanks to all who came to any of my four sessions this week at TechEd 2007 in Orlando. This week was my first week presenting major sessions (I presented a chalk talk last year). In all sessions I made references to a few URLs and code that people wanted to get access to, so here you go!

Using Sharepoint as Content Management System

On Friday I met one of the IT Pros in Singapore that also have been participating in the IT Pro Momentum program I blogged about Monday. He’s working as Systems Analyst at Ngee Ann Polytechnic here in Singapore and he just deployed a pilot of SharePoint 2007 to use as a publishing system for their webpage.

WSS FAQ additions and changes LVIII - 4th to 10th June 2007

Note: All of the addresses of the KB / Articles - 2007 Products / MS / Non-MS Articles below were valid at the time I added them to the WSS FAQ
site and to this file. I can’t guarantee that they still are.

(This is also posted to the WSS newsgroup at microsoft.public.sharepoint.windowsservices - web access via http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/server/sharepoint.mspx)

(Items are added to the WSS FAQ throughout the week so you will find new items more quickly by checking at wss.collutions.com or www.wssfaq.com daily.)

RSS Manager

I don’t know if this feature already exists but I took the time to create an RSS manager.

When you want to enable RSS on a list or a Document Library you need to go to the list itself. This is not a hard job to do when you don’t have many lists or libraries. With this feature you can manage this by just opening a page from the site settings.

Web Parts for SharePoint developers resources

As promised here are the post-webcast resources.   Also, I’ll be posting the date for the ‘added’ webcast - SharePoint workflows for developers shortly.  Thanks to all of you that attended today’s webcast.

WSS Custom Fields: Connected Dropdowns

This happened mostly for 2 reasons:

1.       It’s hard to find good tips about developing custom fields

2.       Some of projects require connected dropdowns functionality

So it was a task, more like a challenging journey. My first successful trial was a field, that creates several connected dropdowns dynamically. Worked like a charm. Then I realized that I can’t sort or filter the list by a single value. All dropdowns add into the same field value. No good.

SharePoint Replication

Great inquiry as to whether SharePoint servers can replicate their data to other servers for increased availability. Unfortunately, that was not supported in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 nor is it supported in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.

If you want to look into disaster recovery scenarios, here are some good resources with which to start:

Virtual Server Issues and Recommendations for MOSS Virtual Environments

One of the tasks that I completed this week was splitting our Development environment (DEV) into multiple VMs — one SQL Server VM, one MOSS 2007 VM for the SSP, and another MOSS 2007 VM for the front-end Web server. Up to this point, DEV was comprised of two VMs: a domain controller and another single-server MOSS configuration (combined SQL Server and MOSS SSP/Web).

MOSS Development Environment and Windows Update Bug

n my previous post, I talked about splitting our MOSS 2007 Development environment (DEV) into multiple VMs. What I did not mention, however, is the nasty bug in Windows Update that I encountered along the way.

Before I can explain the bug I first need to describe the environment. The following model shows the important pieces of the environment.

SharePoint Scaling Limits

Another great post from Mark on SharePoint scaling limits . Definitely worth book marking.

Quick Access to STSADM Command

  1. Type Windows Key + Break to bring up the System Properties dialog.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. Click the Environment Variables button.
  4. In System Variables, scroll down and highlight the Path Variable.
  5. …..

Login prompt Search usage reports

Recently I was deep diving into the Shared Services on my freshly installed virtual machine and when I wanted to view the Search usage reports I got a login prompt. I could type in any user name I wanted, even domain administrators, but the page wouldn’t show!

Turning a domain user into a full blown MOSS2007 farm administrator

Imagine you have a farm administrator. He’s just on his own, because MOSS is so easy to manage that you don’t need more people. He does it all: Creating web applications, site collection, manages the Business Data Catalog, Search, Shared Services, you name it, he does it. And then it happens: He leaves for a better job. I agree, that will not happen very fast and often because, well, SharePoint just rocks, but it happens. So after your done crying and sobbing, you find someone who will and can take his place. This person is now a hero and can’t wait to get started. So the leaving farm administrator needs to grant him the necessary permissions to become a full blown farm administrator. What does he need to do?

SharePoint Solution (WSP) creation tool

“No more manually creating the manifest.xml file.
No more manually specifying the DDF file.
No more using the makecab.exe application.”

Carsten Keutmann has created a SharePoint Solution (WSP) creation tool to generate solutions automatically. The tool can be downloaded on codeplex here.
