Step-by-Step MOSS Installation Videos from Rodney Viana
Rodney Viana (a friend from Brazil) just shared with me two very well crafted videos describing in great detail the process to install and configure Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. Rodney is working with Alfredo Fortenboher on a Video Book on Sharepoint for a project called LabClasses and was nice enough to share it with the world.
Topics in the videos include:
- Starting Installation
- Installation Options
- Add Administrators
- Installing Services
- Setting Up DNS
- Main Web Site
- Site Collection
MOSS 2007 Search Tips & Tricks
MOSS 2007 Search Tips & Tricks
Search in MOSS 2007 is a big topic, and like a lot of big topics, I find it easiest to learn about in small chunks. Here’s an interesting one:
In SharePoint 2007 lists and libraries, there’s a setting (in the Advanced Settings section) where you can exclude items from search results:

I knew what it was for, but recently I ran across a good example of why you might want to use it. (Remember that since search in MOSS 2007 is security-trimmed, one of the more obvious reasons you might think you need to exclude lists or libraries from search results isn’t necessary. )

Mike Walsh’s WSS and more: WSS FAQ additions and changes LXXII - 17th - 22nd September 2007
Note: I’ve spent most of the past week catching up with stuff. What
you won’t notice here are webcasts that happened since I was away and most blog items as I haven’t yet been through most of them.
They’ll be in next week’s. There’s enough to be going on with here in any case.
Note: All of the addresses of the KB / Articles - 2007 Products / MS / Non-MS Articles below were valid at the time I added them to the WSS FAQ
site and to this file. I can’t guarantee that they still are.
(This is also posted to the WSS newsgroup at microsoft.public.sharepoint.windowsservices - web access via http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/server/sharepoint.mspx)
(Items are added to the WSS FAQ throughout the week so you will find new items more quickly by checking at wss.collutions.com or www.wssfaq.com daily.)

10 Things You May Not Know About SharePoint Technology
I was going to write a lengthy post on this topic… but I’m presenting a 2 hour session on this very topic on October 9th to a number of Microsoft customers in the Pacific Northwest. So, I’m going to hold off on it… but I do plan on doing a demo rich web cast showcasing innovative SharePoint 2007 solutions… so if you’re interested, keep your eyes open for a web cast! I’m working with the web cast team to schedule it.
Are folks interested in seeing a set of rich demos (200) or a deeper presentation on how to actually set it up (300)? Topics I plan to cover:
- Enhancing your Social Computing SharePoint solution
- Browser Interoperability (Making WCM work with FireFox)
- PopFly integration w/ SharePoint Technology
- Interoperability with XML
- And more!
I see that Eric Kraus was faced with a requirement normally met with a content query web part. The problem? He was in a pure WSS environment with no access to the CQWP. Rather than curling up in the fetal position (an urge I have to fight every day, it seems), he came up with solution that at least gives WSS shops a fighting chance to succeed. It’s described here.
MOSS Development: Getting your environment up and running.
I thought I would post a quick ‘Getting-Started’ guide for MOSS development. This post comes from my experience learning how to develop for MOSS. This post is a quick listing of what is needed to get your environment up and running.
As you may or may not already know, MOSS will only run on Windows 2003 server. This means that it is best to develop on a 2003 server. I know that most developers DO NOT have 2003 server as their desktop OS, so you need to setup a VPC image with 2003.

Profiles and Properties - Questions and Answers
A e-mail dialogue came up with a colleague surrounding Profiles and Properties in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, with the questions specific to profile cleanup and management of changes in profile properties. How are inactive user profiles managed… How do I management Active Directory property changes in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007’s profile database…
MOSS 2007 Filter webparts part 2 - providing and consuming a default value and using Excel Services
In this post I described a custom filter provider and consumer webpart for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. In this post I show how you can make the provider send a default value to other filter webparts. The second step is to show how you can make a webpart accept an incoming default value from another filter webpart. At the end of this post I will give an example of how you can use your filter provider in combination with Excel Services.
Step 1 – Provide a default value
We will change the behaviour of our provider webpart so that it is able to send filter values and a default value to other webparts. Please note that a default value is always single valued. For a webpart that supports multiple values, multiple default values seem not to be supported by the framework. The first thing to do is implement the IDefaultFilterValue interface:
   public class FilterProvider :
      System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebParts.WebPart,
      ITransformableFilterValues,
      IDefaultFilterValue
After a Long Week Some SharePoint Postings
What a week. I was slammed with meeting, presentations, and information requests which means I got very little posted here. I also heard from a few of you that there was a day with some site issues. Fear not all is fine. There were some updates being applied during the day but that is done. On the bright side now I have full access to Excel Services and InfoPath form services! J I am going to have to come up with some need examples on that. In the meantime the rest of the SharePoint world has been active and here are some of the latest goodies.

Well, it’s almost that time of the year again when many of us need to update our clocks as a result of Daylight Savings Time (DST). The U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005 requires extending the period of DST by four weeks. Starting this year, DST began in March, three weeks earlier in much of the United States and Canada, and will end one week later – the first Sunday in November. We had blogged here about the need to update your SharePoint servers with respective hotfixes back in January.
For those of you who know me, you know I love the technology AND the business side of SharePoint. So, when we discovered that some of our licensing was hampering your deployment architectures, we immediately got to work remedying the situation. For those of you who know how our licensing works, you know that you couldn’t deploy an Intranet and Extranet in the same SharePoint farm because of the licensing. However, we built SharePoint from a technology standpoint to run Intranet, Extranet and even Internet sites all in the same farm, even on the same server! We worked lots and lots of special deals to help customers get changes to their individual licenses but that didn’t help our broad community of customers.

Working With Features Through Code
This post will show you how to work with features through code. Using the API we can install, uninstall, activate and deactivate features.
Install a Feature.
To install a feature we first need to get a reference to our local farm.
SPFarm oFarm = SPFarm.Local;
Then all we have to do is add the feature to the FeatureDefinitions collection on the local farm. The first parameter if a relative path to the feature.xml file (relative to the Features directory. ex: MyFeature\feature.xml). The second parameter is the guid of the feature itself. The guid can be parsed from the feature.xml file. Or this can be the solution guid that the feature belongs to. There are 2 overloads to the Add method explained below.
Random issue with a custom RichHtml field extension
I ran into a small “random” issue at a customer a few months ago. The customer needed a custom RichHtml Field/Control in order to extend its functionality; they needed to add the ability for an author to tag a “Glossary” style to a word while editing, and the control would modify the tagged word to add a pop-up with the description of the word from a “Glossary” publication page.
So I go out and find out how to make a custom field :
- Create a Field class that will be shown in the “Add new column…” page
- Create a Control class that is referenced in the Field class and is instanciated in the Page Layout (and does the rendering)
- Add a CAML definition of your field so that it shows up in the “Add new column … ” page
Technical Whitepaper on Microsoft Deployed SharePoint Server 2007 Search
I just wanted to make sure that everyone saw this technical whitepaper on how Microsoft deployed SharePoint Server 2007 Search internally:
“This document shares the experiences of Microsoft teams in deploying Enterprise Search at Microsoft. Because of the significant amount of knowledge that these teams gained, the experience provides relevant guidance to organizations that want to help improve employee productivity, improve the quality of work produced, reduce duplication of efforts, and take advantage of the financial investment in digital assets by deploying Enterprise Search.”
SYMPTOMS
You change the default view of a category that filters the blog posts on a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 blog site. When you visit the SharePoint Services 3.0 blog site, and then you click the link for the category that you changed, the blog posts are not filtered correctly. Instead, all the blog posts are displayed.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, follow these steps:
| 1. | Log on to a computer that is running Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer, and then use Internet Explorer to visit the SharePoint Services Home page. |
| 2. | On the SharePoint Services Home page, click Site Actions, and then click Create Site. |
| 3. | On the New SharePoint Site page, type a name that you want to use for the temporary site in the Title box. |

I watch this guy for year, yea he do a lot of crazy stuff, but I know he is a really good and nice person. My boyfriend got his all best fights and we probably going to pray today and watch his in ring - so sad love you Mike.
I’m surfing internet till I found your website. I’ll visit you again.
Anyway, visit me for sometime ^_^
